Dressing properly shows respect for your date. This means a suit or tux for guys, and a gown for girls. Prom is a time to be classy, so pick a prom dress that reflects that. Don’t show too much skin.
In the past, the person who asked the other was expected to pay for everything. However, prom has gotten much more expensive in recent years, and many couples choose to split costs. Discuss who will pay for what long before the day of prom, so you don’t have to worry when the check shows up.
Boys, be on time for picking up your date. Do not, under any circumstances, honk the horn for her to come out. Go to the door and introduce yourself to her parents if you have not already met. Being on time goes for girls as well. Don’t keep your date waiting, making awkward small talk with your parents.
Corsages and boutonnieres are expected, unless agreed otherwise. Pin-on corsages go on the left, and boutonnieres on the lapel. Hand the flowers to your date for them to pin on themselves, but if they have difficulty, it is okay to offer assistance.
You can dance with other people at the prom, but make sure you save your first and last dance for your date.
Don’t be afraid to compliment your date. Both guys and girls spend a lot of time getting ready, so let them know you appreciate it.
