Finding a Junior’s Party Dress, Without Showing Too Much Skin

Dances have changed a lot in recent years. Along with elegant ball gowns, it is not uncommon to see dresses that look like they belong in a club (or on the street corner). Obviously fashion changes, but many parents, and many girls, are uncomfortable with the amount of skin that many dresses show off. How do you find a party dress that makes a girl feel sexy, while still looking classy and age appropriate?

A big part of this has to do with fit. If you pick a dress that is too small, you are going to feel uncomfortably aware of your curves all night. If it is too large, it can slip and gap, showing off more than you want.

The neckline of a dress can also have a big influence on how comfortable you are wearing it. Pick something appropriate for your body type. For girls with larger chests, a scoop neck, straight-neck sleeveless, or square neck style is very flattering. These will help creating a flattering bust line without making you feel like you’re going to pop out of your top.

If you go with a sleeveless style, but feel a little exposed, get a shawl to match your dress. This is a classy accessory that provides coverage, but can also be taken off it you get too warm.

If you are okay with showing a little skin, then that’s fine, but whatever you do, don’t pick a dress that you aren’t comfortable in. Wearing something that’s “cool” isn’t going to be worth it if you feel naked all night. You should never feel pressured to do something with your body that you are not comfortable with.

Juniors’ Special Occasion Dresses: How Formal Should I Go?

Figuring out how to dress for special events can be a nightmare. You don’t want to be rude by being under-dressed, but if you are the only one in a ball gown, you are going to feel awkward. Here are a few tips for knowing what to wear to your next big special occasion.

If you are attending a party or event, the ticket or invitation will often give dress guidelines. Your workplace will often have a dress code as well.  Here’s a quick overview of a few common dress codes and exactly what that means, according to Emily Post.

-White tie (prom, some weddings, going to the theater): formal evening gown

-Black tie (similar events as white tie, but black tie becomes appropriate after 6pm): formal evening gown, cocktail dress, your fanciest little black dress

-Semiformal (some weddings, going to the theater, etc): Short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress, long skirt and top, dressy separates

-Business formal (work): Suit, business-style dress, dress with a jacket, stockings (optional in summer), heels

-Business casual (work): Skirt, khakis or pants, open-collar or knit shirt, sweater, casual- style dress

-Dressy Casual (parties with friends, holidays, etc.): Dress, skirt and dressy top, dressy pants outfit, nice jeans and dressy top

If you can, call up the hostess of a party and ask what she thinks is appropriate. If that is not an option and you know other people attending the event, ask what they will be wearing.  For most everyday situations, dressy casual is probably appropriate. You can’t really go wrong with a cute sundress and kitten heels.

Prom Dress Dilemma: Renting vs. Buying

The most decision a girl can make in high school is her prom dress. What color and design? What shoes will go with it? Will my mom let me get away with a strapless dress? But there is one question that is becoming more and more popular: Should I rent or buy my dress? For years, it has been common for guys to rent a tux for a special occasion, but the idea of renting a prom dress is a fairly new idea.

One of benefits of buying the dress is that you can alter it to fit you, and you won’t have to care for the dress in the same way. If you spill on or damage a rental, you might end up paying for it. In addition, you will have that dress forever. Some girls like to turn their prom dresses into quilts or pillows as keepsakes, or display their dress at their wedding someday. Plus, it will always be there if you need it on another occasion. It may not be exciting to wear a dress you’ve worn before, but sometimes it’s the most practical option.

The cool thing about renting a dress is that it allows you to wear a designer prom dress without paying the upscale price. Sites like Wear Today Gone Tomorrow and Rent the Runway offer styles by designers like DESIGNERS at 90% off retail price. However, even though rental dresses are dry cleaned after each use, some girls feel weird wearing a dress that someone else has worn before. If this is you, buying a dress may the way to go.  However, if you want to wear a designer dress, but don’t want to pay retail price, renting might just be a perfect fit.
