Prom Traditions: What Do People Do At Prom?
If you have never attended a school dance, you may be shocked to find that prom has less to do with dancing, and more to do with having fun and continuing traditions. Oh, don’t worry, there is lots of dancing, but that is just a small part of prom, along with tons of food, friends, and glamor.
For girls, the most exciting tradition is the prom dress. It is as if she and all her classmates have decided that, for this one night, dressing like a princess from a fairy tale is completely acceptable. It is thrilling to be able to transform yourself into Cinderella when it is time for prom. And though guys won’t admit it, most of them feel like James Bond in tux.
People usually go to prom in groups, because it alleviates some of the awkwardness of a date situation, plus it’s just more fun with more friends. Many groups choose to do a day date before the dance. Once again, this is to help all the kids in the group get to know and feel comfortable with each other, and of course, to have fun. Things like scavenger hunts, bowling, mini golf, or making dinner are all popular pre-prom date ideas.
At the dance, there is music, food, dancing, and friends. Some schools will serve dinner before prom starts. Most schools have live music or a DJ. There’s usually an area to dance, and a place to sit and talk with friends. It is almost always hot, crowded, and an amazing time.
Some people choose to go to school or community sponsored after parties, or continue to party on their own. While this can be a lot of fun, make sure you don’t do anything foolish. Teen pregnancy and underage drinking are not the way you want to end what should be an amazing night. Have a good time, but do it responsibly.
